Tim Colton is President of Maritime Business Strategies, LLC, a consulting firm specializing in improving the performance of businesses and organizations in the maritime industry.
Tim started his career in shipbuilding in 1958, at Lithgows Limited, on the River Clyde, where he served an apprenticeship and became Planning Manager.
After a stint as Production Manager of a Canadian shipyard, he joined John J. McMullen Associates in New York City in 1968, where he worked primarily as a consultant to the shipbuilding industry.
Tim returned to active shipbuilding in 1978, as VP, Planning, for Levingston Shipbuilding, in Orange, Texas, but moved back north in 1982 when Levingston bought Sun Ship, to be VP, Marketing, for Pennsylvania Shipbuilding.
In 1988, he became a shipbuilding consultant again, this time with his own firm, Colton & Company, in Washington DC.
Tim returned to shipbuilding a second time in 1998, joining Halter Marine Group as Senior VP, Production Support, subsequently becoming Senior VP, Business Development, for Friede Goldman Halter. He left FGH in May 2001 to return to consulting.
Tim has a B.Sc. in naval architecture from the University of Glasgow and an M.S. in industrial engineering from Columbia University. He is Chairman of the Public Policy Committee of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, and also serves on the U.S. Advisory Committee of Lloyd’s Register. He is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects, a Life Member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers and a Senior Member of the Institute of Industrial Engineers.
